Axis Uses Fast Track Management to Bring Octo Waterfront Grille to Life

Philadelphia, PA... A resurrection of sorts has taken place along Columbus Avenue with the June 25th opening of Octo Waterfront Grille, once home to the Rock Lobster Club. The new 13,000 square foot bar and grill features three bars, 240 seats for casual fine dining, two lounges, a dance floor, and a signature octopus display tank ― a traditional 10-week project that was constructed within five weeks by Axis Construction Management.
Owner Clark Maloney's ambitious project posed several challenges once architects, Jay Tackett and Frank Rapisarda, of Tackett & Company, Inc. envisioned and created the plans. “The site sat unoccupied and exposed to the elements for three years, so we had our work cut out for us from the start,” explained Steve Finkelstein, Director of Operations for Axis. The project’s initial stage of construction included pier stabilization and strengthening to create a strong foundation for the work to follow.
“We also installed all new decking, built new bars, renovated the kitchen, created steel supports for the new tent cabling, and have overseen a host of architectural details and finishes,” Finkelstein said. “The final product will impress any guest, and is a tribute to the owner’s vision, the architect’s wonderful design and the tireless efforts of our management and field team.”

Clark Maloney Clark Maloney is a Philadelphia nightlife luminary with a keen sense of style and intense focus on customer service. Maloney managed “legendary bar” Xero from 1989 to 1993. After Xero, Clark and a partner opened Milkbar, a cutting-edge 7,800 square foot nightclub that produced $1.4 million in sales, and took the city’s dance club set by storm. In 1997, Maloney became a manager at Rock Lobster, and within a year, became General Manager of the $4 million seasonal bar/nightclub on the same site that Octo occupies at 221 N. Columbus Blvd. In September of 2003, after six successful years at Rock Lobster, Maloney founded Landshark Enterprises, LLC, a marketing and promotions company utilizing direct-to-consumer traditional and alternative marketing strategies. |
